The most known
penguins
are surely the "emperors" one who reside in the Antarctic and tolerate extreme temperatures.
The species of penguins with Crozet and Kerguelen are less known.
They are first of all the "king" penguins. They have a size of 90 cm and live in large colonies, from 20 to 60 000 individuals.
The individual (at the right) sleeps and maintains his nozzle warm under his aileron.
But, one finds also "papous" penguins : they have a size of 25 cm, live within small groups of 10 to 20, in broad and wet meadows.
There are finally two different families of penguins: "jumping gorfous" and the "gilded gorfous", which are characterized by a yellow brush on the head.
Due to the absence of natural terrestrial predators, all these penguins are not very savage. But it is to better remain few meters away : a well placed blow of nozzle may transpierce your hand!!
The principal predator of all these penguins is
the killing whale
. In the island of Possesion, they patrol 2 times per day, along the bays accomodating the colonies of penguins. We did some at 5 or 6 occasions, but I do not have any good pictures to offer :(
