Around Durbar square, you can easily spend few hours walking through the maze of narrow lanes and colorful little shop carrying unique items as Nepalese wood carvings or Tibetan handicrafts.
But expect a lot of dirt and dusty air and an increasing pollution from diesel fumes. Anyhow, except, for some crazy rickshaws or motodrivers, you fell quite safe while walking in Katmandu, even at dusk. If you visit Katmandu, you will most probably stay in
Thamel
.
Some people like the place, other consider it as a tourist ghetto and avoid it. Anyhow, hanging around is quite safe ! You can very easily find an accommodation, and any usual western goods.. and If you want to let print a photo roll or check your email account : no problem…
Enjoy the local food and drink some lassis ! On my side, I really enjoy some Tibetan foods…
And, if you really want to stick to western foods, be aware that pizzas or hamburgers (based on buffalo meat) may have here a very local taste…
